Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? Check here first, then feel free to give us a call if you can't find the answer.

01

I'm on my period. Should I still come?

Yes! Because we see the pelvic floor as PART of the whole, there is much we can continue to work on and change that doesn't require internal work. Also, we're totally fine doing internal work when individuals are flowing. If you're comfortable with it, we are too!

02

Can I bring my kids if I can't find childcare?

Absolutely. We are here for you, kids and all. We understand that finding childcare is tricky! We are absolutely fine with you bringing your littles.

03

Do you direct bill?

We do not direct bill, however, we will provide you with an email or printed receipt that you can forward to your insurance company for reimbursement.

04

What if I'm struggling financially and can't afford care.

We do our very best to offer as much as we can within what your budget allows, even that means having one appointment. For those on income support or in need, we also offer a subsidized cost plan using our Community at Elle Fund. Call or text Loreen at the clinic to find out more.

05

Is a pelvic exam necessary?

Performing an internal pelvic exam allows our therapists to really understand what is happening with the muscles and structures of the pelvis. We understand that this might be a difficult thing for you. All the physiotherapists at Elle are specially trained through a trauma informed lens and proceed with the utmost care and your consent. If you still don't feel comfortable, it's OKAY! You get to set the rules. There is still so much we can help with by treating the external areas and by providing exercise and education.

06

Is this covered by insurance?

Yes! If your extended health insurance includes physiotherapy, then it will cover our services.

07

How many treatments are needed?

The short answer is, it depends. Most patients are seen between 4-6 times, however some conditions, especially persistent pelvic pain conditions, usually take longer. Your physiotherapist will discuss what your care plan will involve at your initial assessment appointment.

08

I'm pregnant. When should I come in?

The recommended course of prenatal care is starting at 24-30 weeks for an initial assessment, a labor and delivery preparation appointment at 35 weeks, an early 1 week post c-section virtual appointment and a 6 week postpartum assessment. Of course, if you are having any pain or discomfort at any time during your pregnancy, you should pop in for care.

09

Is it ever too late for pelvic health physio?

Never! If you have a pelvis and a pelvic floor (ahem, that's everyone) you would benefit from pelvic health physiotherapy. Just because you're 25 years postpartum, doesn't mean it's too late.

10

What will my first appointment look like?

Your physiotherapist will bring you back to a private room, then start by listening to your story. This might include everything from your history of symptoms, information about pregnancies, births, and menstrual or hormone symptoms, to bowel and bladder function and exercise. It's important to us that we take the time to really hear you and identify what your goals are for seeking care. Then we'll do a thorough physical examination; the low back, hips, abdominal wall, breathing, and strength. Then, after a complete explanation of what is involved and with your consent, we will do a pelvic floor assessment. Based on our findings and on your goals, we'll begin treatment, give lots of education and start you with a home program of things to work on.
